Grilled sardines

Sardines very popular in the Mediterranean countries. They are cooked in many ways but especially during summer grilled sardines are one of the most popular dishes.

Sardines are a very good example when asking why Mediterranean diet is very healthy. They contain a large amount of the precious omega 3 fatty acids which promote health. Omega 3 fatty acids may help lower cholesterol, are beneficial during pregnancy and many more.

And of course grilled sardines are delicious, maybe one of the best ideas for barbecue during summer. This Greek recipe is simple, very popular and you may order it together with ouzo in many Greek restaurants in Greek islands.

Ingredients:

  • 1,5 kg sardines
  • Coarse salt to taste and oregano
  • Fresh lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil for serving

Directions:

  1. Remove scales, guts, gils and head from the sardines. Wash with fresh water and drain.
  2. Grill each side for 5 minutes and while grilling add salt and oregano to taste. 
  3. Serve immediately with lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil on top

Sardines are delicious together with Greek salad or boiled zucchini or potato salad

Tips:

If using an oven grill place the sardines on a baking tray and grill. For extra flavor you may add some chopped garlic, red pepper flakes or ground black pepper.
