Cabbage with rice – Lahanorizo

Lahanorizo is a traditional Greek  vegetarian recipe with cabbage and rice. It is easy to make, is very healthy and of course it has great taste. 


The simplicity of this dish, the easy to find ingredients and the fact that you don't need any skills to cook this recipe makes it even more popular and good. It is a dish that represent well the Mediterranean and Greek diet because it consists of vegetables that grow in Mediterranean countries and cooked with extra virgin olive oil.


  • 1 kg cabbage chopped
  • 200 gr rice long grain or parboiled
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 100 gr spring onions finely chopped
  • 80 ml extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tomatoes chopped or 50gr concentrated tomato paste
  • salt and pepper to taste


  • lemon juice
  • grated cheese or feta


  1. Heat the olive oil in a pot and saute the onion and spring onions for a couple of minutes.
  2. Add the add the cabbage and stir. After a couple of minutes add a glass of water and the tomato paste or chopped tomatoes. Let cook for 15 minutes in medium heat.
  3. Add about 300 ml boiling water and the rice. Also add salt and pepper to taste. Cook in low heat until rice is cooked (should take about 20 minutes). Add some more water if needed.
  4. Serve with lemon juice on top. You can also add some grated cheese or feta. 

For glouten free choose a type of rice that is certified glouten free. All other ingredients listed in the recipe do not naturaly contain gluten.
